Of the 67,290 suffocation deaths given a manner ruling other than accident, 96.0% were ruled suicide and 0.9% were left undetermined. The cautious box exists; it is almost never used. CDC WISQARS, suffocation mechanism (the bucket containing hanging — there is no hanging-only code). National total computed by us from state rows, not a CDC-published figure; 8 homicide and 11 undetermined cells were withheld under small-number suppression, so those two bars are floors.
